Do trees feel pain the same as we do?

Paula Flint

Wivelsfield Ancient Yew

(also known as: "Genteel")

Instead of my usual "do you have a message for humanity?" question when visiting the yews I decided to change it up a bit one day and ask this1,600 year old yew a series of questions regarding how trees ‘feel’ physically. Many of us feel sad and upset when we see a tree being chopped down or what we perceive to be ‘in distress’ so I thought I'd explore how they experience it.

This is what she had to say:

Do you feel physical pain, such as storm damage or when branches are lopped?

We do not experience pain in the same manner as humans, although we are aware when our fixed form fails us or is taken from us.

Do you feel sadness when other species of trees undergo mass devastation such as Dutch Elm disease and rain forest destruction?

It is a great sadness when any species undergoes extinction, whether it be fixed form or otherwise. We were unable to prevent the Elm disease nor are we able to assist in the welfare of the rain forests. The best we can hope for is that mankind comes to their senses before it is too late to save the planet and all living beings, fixed and physical.

How do you feel about people who carve their initials?

It does not bother us. Indeed it gives us joy if it makes another spirit happy to do so.

How do you feel when we chop a branch off?

We are anxious that it will not extend to the rest of our form being destroyed for we give home and shelter to a great number of wildlife species.

What will happen if all trees or all trees of a species get chopped down?

There will be great sadness but also a celebration of all that we have learned through our time on this planet. It has been a joy and fulfilling.
